Seminar 11

                     Learning experience for "Seminar in English Language Teaching" 



Today in the classroom, teacher gave the students divided groups by each group have 5-6 person. After that, teacher told the students read a article "Current Trends and Issues in English Language Education in Asia" and gave the students helped to discuss about this article include showed the opinion for this text and teacher told the students in each group that everyone in group helped to summarize about this text and then each group come up in front of the class and present. When each group presented to finish teacher summarized about information in this text again. Teacher summarized 9 items.
1. Changes in perspective on ELT&learning.
2. Changes in goals of ELT&learning.
3. Changes in teaching approaches.
4. Changes in teaching content, curriculum design and assessment.
5. Expanding the dimension of communicative competence.
6. Changes in views of an effective English educator.
7. Early start in learning English.
8. Rapid development and integration of IT in ELT.
9. Changing roles&increasing responsibilities of teachers.
After that, teacher told about 21st Century Themes (Global awareness, Environmental literacy, Health literacy and Financial, economic, business). And teacher explained about :
Skills - Learning&Innovation skills
         - Life&Career
1. Learning and Innovation skills
4Cs      - Creativity&innovation
            - Critical thinking&problem solving
            - Communication
            - Collaboration
2. Information, Media and Technology skills
            - Information literacy
            - Media literacy
            - ICT literacy

            - Flexibility and adaptability
            - Social and cross-cultural skills
            - Leadership and responsibility
            - Initiative and self-direction
            - Productivity and accountability
And then, teacher told about :
1. More and more research and discussion are focused on the issues of "Word Englishes", English as a Lingua franca (ELF).
2. Students should know about global issues or care about social problems.
3. Enlightened eclecticism (Brown, 1994) or principled eclecticism (Larsen - Freeman, 2000).
4. - ELT classroom is interdisciplinary e.g. CBLT, CITC
    - English is not viewed as an end in itself but as a means to learn subject area knowledge.
5. The implication here is that when teaching ICC, teachers need to teach both local and international culures.
6. The Internet, Youtube, Web 2.0, e-books, and various websites have changed the way teachers.
7. With the new trends happening, the role of today's teachers is also evolving and their responsibilities have also been increasing.

In addition, I can bring the knowledge that I get in this course come to use in learning and teaching English in the future. This course make me to practice many skills that important in daily life effectively. I love this course and I enjoy to learn in this subject.

Learning experience for "Seminar in English Language Teaching" 



Today in the classroom, teacher told about CLT by using Weblog which teacher told Weblog helps you to reflect the experience include to develop critical thinking that Weblog is one part of CLT and have many benefits. After that, teacher told about ICT and teacher asked the questions What is ICT? which teacher explained by illustrate using mobilephone that we use to send the text or message etc. And then, teacher told about What is blended learning? which teacher explained that Computer Assisted Language Learning: CALL which divide into three phases of CALL: 

1. Behavioristic CALL 
2. Communicative CALL
3. Integration CALL 
Behavioristic CALL
Inplemented in the 1960s and 70s.
- Based on Behaviorist theories of learning.
- Repetitive language drills i.e. "drill and practice" (drill&kill); computer as tutor.
Rationale: 
- Repeated exposure to the same material is benefit.
Communicative CALL
Based on the Communicative Approach.
- focuses move on using forms rather than on the farms themselves.
- teachers grammar implicitly.
- allows and encourages students to generate original utterances rather than just manipulate prefabricated language.
- avoid telling students they are wrong.
- uses the target language exclusively.
- will never try to do anything that a book can do just as well. 
Several types of programs were developed and used.
- Programs that provide skill practice in a non-drill format.
Three models of computer:
1. The computer remains the "knower-of-the-right-answer". 
2. The computer as stimulus. 
3. The computer as tool or, as sometimes called, the computer and workhorse.
Integrative CALL 
Steps toward integrative CALL: multimedia 
and teacher gives to watch the article "English: the language of the internet.
After that, teacher taught about "Steps toward integrative CALL: the internet
1. The world Wide Web.
2. Computer Mediated Communication (CMC).
3. Asynchronous (not simultaneous).
4. Synchronous (synchronoun, "real time").
5. One-to-one communication and one-to-many communication. 
And after, teacher shows the article "ICT and Education: Implications for English Language Teaching. 
Then, teacher presents the text again about "Facebook: An online environment for learning of English in institutions of higher education? 
In addition, I think that learning in this course can develop many skills and help to support thinking for me in order to bring to use in the future effectively.
