Learning experience for "Seminar in English Language Teaching"


Today, in the classroom teacher gave a text about "Classroom learning contexts: teachers' descriptions" which in this text had the information about classroom teaching by using many activity. In text divide to three country e.g. an English lesson in Malaysia, an English lesson in Mozambique and an English lesson in China. After that, teacher gave the students helped to discuss for learning and teaching in each country had different how? By the students read the text and analyzed each topic that teacher limited:
e.g. 1. Use of space
       2. Use of time
       3. Language Data
       4. Resources
       5. Interaction
       6. Atmosphere
Then, teacher gave the students shared their opinions in classroom. And after that, teacher gave the informations that conclusion each topic and analyzed again.
The information in worksheet:
1. Malaysian
    - Use of space     : Students sitting at front of class.
    - Use of time        : Completing exercises on story + homework when lesson finishes.
    - Language Data  : Story + exercises + Interaction T/S.
    - Resources         : Story book including pictures.
    - Interaction         : T/Ss to change seating and do exercises.
    - Atmosphere       : Student focused on tasks; 'Business-like'.
2. Mozambican
    - Use of space      : Students sitting in pairs.
    - Use of time        : Copying dialogue on the board; read and practice dialogue privately, 2 Ss act dialogue out; Ss write new dialogue in pairs and present dialogues to class.
    - Language Data   : Sample dialogue; Ss' dialogues.
    - Resources          : Board, Sample dialogue and Ss dialogue.
    - Interaction          : Teacher gives instructions to Ss re tasks; Ss in pairs and to whole class.
    - Atmosphere        : Orderly and controlled, 'business-like'.
3. Chinese
    - Use of space      : Students in rows; teacher stands at front.
    - Use of time         : Teacher gives lecture-Ss make note.
    - Language Data   : Text.
    - Resources          : Text book, teaching aids.
    - Interactions        : Teacher exchanges greetings with Ss; question/answer session.
    - Atmosphere       : Cordial; 'business-like'.

After that, teacher gave to ask three questions with the students:
1. Make comments on each classroom learning context?
Answer In my opinion, First, in classroom Malaysia can make the students to interest in reading and focus on reading for each point include it can make to analyze the information effectively. Second, in classroom Mozambique can make to learn using daily life. Third, in classroom China can make to get the many knowledge but it may be make to give the students is boring because emphasize lecture.
2. Which classroom do you like most?
Answer I like Mozambican's classroom because the activity have interested by using dialogue and it can make the students to practice about writing dialogue and it is experiences that the students can bring to use in daily life.
3. What are strengths and weaknesses of each classroom?
Answer For the strengths: Change their opinion about dialogue by using own language and found the information about topic by themselves. It can make them are clearly and easy to understand include it makes students to enjoy in class.
For the weaknesses: Teacher don't focus on the topic and don't have suggest for the students.
After that, teacher let the volunteers to present the answers in front of class.


Then, teacher gave the students helped to think that what is the factors affecting ELT and learning? Which it divide to three topics:
For my answer: 1. Teacher

                              - control the students
                              - experiences
                         2. Students
                              - attitude
                              - readyness
                              - age
                              - learning style
                              - motivation
                              - background knowledge
                         3. Learning environment
                              - large class / class size

                              - weather
and after that, teacher gave the students shared the answers with other students in classroom. Today, I got many knowledge very much for this class because teacher had many activity that it made to practice for analysis and thinking. I enjoyed to share many information with teacher and my friends. I would bring the knowledge to develop teaching in classroom for in the future effectively later.

Seminar 5

         Learning experiences for "Seminar in English Language Teaching"

Today, in this class I absented because I have a headache and sore throat but after that I getting better. I asked my friends that what did the teacher teach/do on last Tuesday? My friends told me that teacher taught about "The Role of English language Education in Asian" and provided groups. After that, teacher gave the students discuss about role of English language Education in Asian and then, each group present in front of the class. I found the information : The roles of English language education in Asian countries can be defined into 3 categories : 
1. NNS (Non-Native speakers) interactions in communicating through English for encourage their interactions and to create the environment to activate their interactions in daily life.
2. To emphasize the bi-directionality in communicating among NS and NNS in globalized world. 
3. To acknowledge the effectiveness of NNS teachers in teaching English in Asian countries and cultivate good NNESTs (Nonnative English-speaking Teachers). 

For this class I could find the information and develop about reading many text include to interpret texts in order to easy to understand and bring to apply in daily life effectively.

Learning experiences for "Seminar in English Language Teaching"
Today, in the classroom teacher talked about "The difference between ESL and EFL teaching" After that, teacher gave to provide groups by each group had five people. Then, teacher gave each group discuss about "The difference between ESL and EFL teaching" from the information that we found. We helped to share the information about "What are the difference between ESL and EFL teaching" from the information that I found are 7 things that you should know before teaching ESL had : 
1. Teaching English is not going to make you rich
2. But working on the side might
3. Most expats are not worth your time
4. The earlier you build an exit strategy, the better
5. Your contract is not life or death
6. Replacement ESL jobs are a dime a dozen
7. Your time abroad is going to fly right past you.
and then, teacher gave each group presented the information in front of the class. When each group presented finish. Teacher taught about "21st century learning : Pedagogical Perspectives"

Today, I got a lot of knowledge from this course and this course could make me develop English teaching effectively. So, I loved this course today and I enjoyed with searching the new knowledge  and sharing the knowledge from outside of the classroom.
